Aerospace and defence work lives or dies on cut quality, and the reasons are physical rather than aesthetic. A recast layer on the edge of a titanium part is a fatigue initiation site. A dross particle on an aluminium-lithium edge is a crack initiator under fatigue loading. On a part that flies, that is not a quality note, it is a non-conformance that stops the programme.
The materials make it harder. Ti-6Al-4V at 3–6 mm is chemically reactive and burns at the surface if the cut is not protected by a controlled atmosphere. Al-Li 2195 and 2050 have high thermal conductivity and low fracture toughness, and demand both a clean edge and a tight cut path. Inconel 718 and other nickel alloys generate heat that changes the metallurgy at the edge.
Then there is the paperwork. Aerospace primes work to AS9100 and Nadcap processes, with approved cutting parameters, verified consumable lots and full traceability on every part. A new laser source is not just a machine purchase; it is a qualification project that touches the quality manual, the operator training matrix and the customer source-approval file.
Defence work adds its own layer: mix changes fast, order sizes are unpredictable, and the programme may need a titanium bracket today and a steel support tomorrow. A cell that only handles one material well is not enough.

The LP-F6000 Heavy-Duty Fiber Series is built around a short-focus optical path and a beam quality that holds a small spot through thick, reflective alloys, which is what keeps the recast layer narrow on titanium and the dross on aluminium-lithium down to a level that passes first-article inspection without secondary dressing.
Nitrogen cutting with the closed cutting head keeps titanium surfaces free of oxidation, and the source supports the narrow, tall pierce strategies needed on aerospace alloys — a capability the older fibre platforms in the shop could not offer.
For qualification, LaserPeak supplies the parameter set for each alloy and thickness, with cutting data, gas flows and consumable life logged on the control and exportable for the quality file. That turns qualification from a six-month trial into a documented process that can be handed to an auditor.
The LP-W Series Laser Welding head supports the programme's repair and build-up work on thin-wall titanium and aluminium-lithium structures, and the LP-F1500 series covers prototype and low-volume tooling work where the part changes faster than the setup.
Configuration is matched to the mix: LP-F6025 and LP-F8025 platforms handle heavy plate and thick structural sections, while LP-F4020 covers the mid-range work that dominates aero-structural programmes.
